So pretty much 2015 for me so far? Busy. Very busy.
I’ve been working on my writing retreat. Finally nailed down a desk and bookcase combination I’m happy with. To top it off I got two papasans for my reading nook with matching cushions, pillows, and throw rugs.
And so, for the first time in far too long this weekend, I decided (read: my CP told me to take a break and read or else) to sit down with a good book (in hard copy) and relax in my cushions and read.
Reading is not only completely therapeutic, it’s also one of the best things to do as a writer. You can’t be a writer if you don’t read. Read everything you can read, everything you can devour. It’s where my need to write started, and I’m sure it’s where a lot of people learned the love of storytelling.
My room isn’t complete. The furniture doesn’t arrive for another week or so, and one of my papasan’s doesn’t have its big cushion yet. None of that matters though, because I got to snuggle up with one of my favorite authors and descend into her world for a little while.
If you want to create your own worlds, make sure you spend time in those created by other people.
Read. Read some more.
And then go and write.
(and maybe snuggle a kitty)
I put on my goals for 2015 to read more. I didn’t read much last year (didn’t do much of anything really) and want to change that. I also did a Goodreads challenge and that is a nice motivator.
I didn’t really do 2015 goals this year, but one thing I want to do and not just for this year is read more. And not to re-read. And not just intern/cp/client books. Here’s to lots of reading!
Timely reminder for me as this was exactly what I was thinking this morning after I woke up. I do need to read more, far more, than I do now.

Great minds! A love of reading is where it all started, so I think it’s important to continue that. And right now for me – it’s vital I remember the why hehe
Reading is also where I picked up my love of storytelling so I agree whole-heartedly that reading is essential to being a writer. I don’t have a cute cat to snuggle with, but my stuffed penguin will work 🙂
Penguins all the way!
My cat is ridiculously obsessed with my lap haha and he loves the new blankets.
Reading is such a beautiful thing – it lets us live vicariously in so many ways.
A million likes for this post. (For both reading more and getting writing work space perfected.)
My goal this year is to not only read more, but to read new things. Sometimes I fall into a re-reading rut and this year I want to break out of it. My BFF and I are also reading books together and committing ourselves to follow through on actually reading each other’s recommendations.
Thank you!
I didn’t make my (published) book reading goal last year, so I upped it this year and I am determined to make it a minimum of published books on top of anything I read for cps/internship/clients
Looks like I have a lot of reading ahead of me 😉 Good luck with yours!
I was very disappointed at the end of 2014 when I sat down and looked at my goodreads challenge, and I’d failed by a LOT. Normally I read 50+ books a year… last year I read maybe 20, and it was frustrating.
This year I’ve read at least one already, and I’m in the middle of another, so hopefully I can stay on track and not get too busy. Or rather, get better and making time to read.
Because there really is nothing like sinking into another world for a bit.
It’s a great bit of escapism and sometimes, it’s fully necessary. Good luck with your list this year. Are you going to OWFI? I’m so headed there this year. Excited about it. Going to soak up all the writerly atmosphere
