I should probably clear up any confusion people may have.
Yes, I’m an avid video gamer, to the point of having to watch myself when I play. As in – I generally let them take over my life and forget about everything else. With my writing ‘career’ having taken a serious turn, and a baby on the way – both my husband and I agreed we’d just play games casually.
This has led to me mostly avoiding them completely ๐ I find it very difficult to do things at half mast ๐
However – Guild Wars 2 headstart was this weekend, and of course I’d preordered it (as did hubs) and we played. But I was proud of us. We still did housework, cooked our meals and didn’t play 24/7. For anyone who plays more on the ‘hardcore’ side of things, you’ll understand what an accomplishment this was lol.
I did enjoy it. Got my main – a Sylvari Necromancer to 20, and rolled my Mesmer as well. I genuinely like the game, especially that it doesn’t have a monthly fee. ย What I don’t like is character storage space – excuse me whilst I go growl at something. Character storage space needs to be real world money paid for. I’m irked. Definitely irked ๐ And their special in game currency – gems – has no benefit for buying the damn things in bulk. You get the same amount of gems per $ if you buy $10 or $50 worth. This makes no sense to me at all… grrrrr
ANYWAY!
This leads me to #writemotivation. I had a lovely chat with my agent last week, and feel about 500000000000 times better about a lot of things. Mainly the way I structure my stories and the gradual revelation of information – and the style and voice I write with. I feel much better about it, and happy with a few decisions we made. September #writemotivation will be fantastic for me!
By the way, if you haven’t signed up – don’t forget to do so here!
Needless to say – September will be a huge edit month for me.
How about you? Are you looking forward to September? Do you let games distract you too much?
First of, so jealous you get to play GW2… *evil glare*
Second: I totally get the addictive nature of games. I’ve barely played them since I started writing. When I do play them, I limit my time. Otherwise, I would do nothing else!
Third: Really excited about September. I only need 2K to hit 15 for this month and next month should get me to the halfway point on my new novel (more if I can swing it!).
Uh, huge gamer girl over here as well. I won’t be playing GW2, because I am sadly still playing WoW. And we have a huge expansion coming up Sept 25th. Hopefully I am finished with all my major goals for Sept by launch day, because if not…that expansion is going to have to wait. And that will drive my gamer brain nuts!!!
I’m proud of you!! *hugs* <3
I have a sortasimilar problem. I don't get TOO into one game. Instead I play "Just a bit" on a whole bunch of different games. Still timesucks like a black hole. Working on kicking that habit, now. The interwebs is full of shinys. Dangerous shinys. ๐
I’m not a gamer but it sounds like you and hubby accomplished something great by not playing all day and all night so Bravo!
September is going to be very busy with writing every which way I look. Prepping posts for a blogtown tour. Working on a WiP in preparation for GUTGAA. Just a lot of stuff happening lol!
Raises hand Another gamer girl, here. I actually quit cold turkey when I decided to Indie publish, because I’m on the computer 12 to 14 hours a day as it is. My eyes were going to pop out of my sockets. And I’m not a halfway kind of player, either. It is far too easy to lose a 16 hour day on the game.
But as Bonnie says, WoW’s expansion comes out next month, and I feel a certain pull. Maybe I’ll use it as a reward for accomplishing my #writemotivation goals. Goals first, then game. Yeah. We’ll see how that goes.
Former avid gamer girl here! I used to play Call of Duty WAY too much. Like Tam I went cold turkey and now the only thing I seem to ever use my XBOX for is watching DVDs. So excited that you and your hubby are keeping at the reduced gaming. ๐
Also excited about September #writemotivation and happy that your agent helped ease some stress. Exciting times for you!
Well there are obvious games that are worth spending a little extra time on, right? ๐
Only Facebook games distract me anymore. heh
My brother was an avid gamer when we were kids; he was the type to buy a new game and then beat it seventy-five consecutive times in a row without eating or sleeping until he was “over” it. ๐ I’m not quite so hardcore. Generally I press all the buttons and hope something good happens. But I still enjoy watching other people play. ๐
WooT! I, too, got GW2 – collector’s edition because I HAD to have that figure. Sadly, the most I got to do was roll up my toons. SO many other things got in the way. Mostly things I am catching up on writing included.
MAJK
Yay for girl gamers! How’s the game besides the gems?
I sometimes set a timer to remind me to stop playing Lord of the Rings Online. ๐
